Kitsap County GIS Road Atlas

Project Description:

The Kistap County GIS Road Atlas was developed as part of the Kitsap County Land Use Information System project.  The County’s Public Works department generates a printed Road Log atlas of the Kitsap County for use by field personnel. In order to leverage the County’s ArcInfo GIS mapping capability Paladin was given the task to automate the generation of the printed road atlas via a user-friendly graphical interface. The Road Atlas application was built as a custom ArcMap application in VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) and leveraged ESRI’s ArcObects libraries. The business and data components were developed using Visual Basic .NET technologies. VB.NET was used at the request of the County to keep up with the latest technology.

Among the challenges of this project was the automatic generation of the Road Atlas index section, which provided a cross-reference of all printed features to one or more page numbers. In the end, the application allowed Public Works users to not only generate the entire atlas. It also enabled users to print maps and indexes for a subset of geographical regions.
