Project Name:

Ground Fish Survey Editor Application

Project Dates:

May 2002 to June 2002

Project Description:

The Ground Fish Survey Editor named “SurveyEDIT” was developed as part of the Ground Fish Survey Database Support project.

The NOAA Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC) conducts an annual Ground Fish Survey off of the Western coast of the United States. The purpose of the annual Survey is to sample fish catches in specific geographical areas and to collect data to support statistical analysis of fish populations.

In previous years the Sampling team had used another on-board application named “Flipper” which was used to collect and store event and fish sampling data on-board the fishing vessel. The application was not user-friendly, difficult to use, and prone to errors. In addition, the Flipper application did not provide adequate visibility to the data to allow Survey team members to review and correct discrepancies in the sampling data as they occur. Often, when deck personnel are weighing and measuring sampled fish, species are not correctly identified, incorrect codes are entered into the automated fish meter, or total weights don’t match the sum of the aggregate weights sampled. Given the ability to review this sampling data after each net tow, Field Party Chiefs can more accurately correct these discrepancies in the database.  The Survey Editor application was developed specifically for this purpose.

The Survey Editor tool provides the Survey team with a way to quickly view summary information, browse catch and event information, automatically identify potential errors, make notations, and manage sampling and sensor equipment related to net tows as they are performed at sea. An additional consideration was the fact that the computer literacy level of many Survey team members was minimal. As a result the Survey Editor application was developed with a very user-friendly web-like interface. To date, the Survey Editor is the only application that the Survey Team has ever praised.
